The Adaptive Structures topic of LASIS is concerned with adaptive structures consisting of smart materials with characteristics that can change in response to internal and external stimulation. The emphasized smart materials of LASIS are Magnetorheological (MR)/Electrorheological (ER) Fluids/Elastomers and Giant Magnetostrictive Materials (GMM).
(a) Semi-active tunable damping/stiffness devices for shock and vibration control systems, such as MR/ER fluid damper/clutch/brake and MR elastomer isolator/absorber;
(b) Fast-response and high-precision active devices using GMM; and
(c) "Functional Integration": Self-powered, self-sensing and/or self-controlled Adaptive Structures.
