The Adaptive Structures topic of LASIS is concerned with adaptive structures consisting of smart materials with characteristics that can change in response to internal and external stimulation. The emphasized smart materials of LASIS are Magnetorheological (MR)/Electrorheological (ER) Fluids/Elastomers, Giant Magnetostrictive Materials (GMM) and Shape Memory Alloy (SMA).
(a) Semi-active tunable damping/stiffness devices for shock and vibration control systems, such as MR/ER fluid damper/clutch/brake, MR elastomer isolator/absorber;
(b) Fast-response and high-precision active devices using GMM and SMA, such as brake and engine;
(c) "Functional Integration": Self-powered, self-sensing and/or self-controlled Adaptive Structures.
